The Chanterelle Club

If you’ve ever been mushroom hunting, you can easily understand the similarities between it and grape farming. So much of your success hinges upon weather, soil, location and experience. Master mushroom forager Charlie Barra started hunting for mushrooms in the dense, damp forests of Mendocino County, CA as a young child in the 1930’s. Trained by his Italian immigrant grandfather Guiseppe Rovera, Charlie learned at a young age how to spot the delectable black, white and golden chanterelles, the meaty porcinis and the “earthy” morels. And after a good rain in early October, the memories of teaching his own grandson, 60 years later, how to spot the Chanterelles at the beds of Oak trees, still make him smile.

And like good wine, good mushrooms are something to be shared and experienced. During mushroom season, you can find Charlie and Martha drying, frying, simmering and sharing these wonderful delicacies with friends and family. So in the spirit of Charlie’s Italian heritage and his love for sharing fruits of the earth with friends and family, we invite you to join the Chanterelle Club and begin your own new experiences with Barra of Mendocino wines.
